First online meeting of the Thematic working group “Energy”

On the 31st of July 2023, the first online meeting of the Thematic Working Group “Energy” was held and 25 participants attended.

The main task was to develop feasible policy recommendations and to create an advocacy framework for these solutions to be endorsed by regional-decision makers and the EU. Policy recommendations will be developed through synergy and partnership of civil society organizations and the experts’ community, within an evidence-based consultative process.

Jovan Rajić (RERI) briefly presented 2022 recommendations and assessment of their application by the decision-makers.

Mirko Popović (RERI) briefly presented key recommendations for 2023, developed by the Advisory Committee: establishment of a feasible mechanism for robust investment in decarbonization, through the EU emission trading system (ETS); development of a roadmap for overcoming the obstacles in the application of the Energy Community Treaty, particularly related to LCP and IED directives; development of the report on Energy Community Treaty implementation and the Community outcomes are of high relevance, with more democratic and transparent decision-making system within the Energy Community; breaching of the Energy Community Treaty should be highlighted in EU Commission annual reports; extreme energy poverty reduction should be prioritized, with more decentralized energy production and reduction of peaks in energy consumption.

The need to identify recommendations that are based on previous year experience was highlighted during the meeting, which is why one of the tasks is to produce a report that will assess the progress in implementation of recommendations developed in 2022. Participants' attitude was that recommendations should be repeated whenever possible.

Policy recommendations will be developed through synergy and partnership of civil society organizations and the experts’ community, within an evidence-based consultative process.
