Two Italian think tanks, Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa (OBCT) and Centro Studi di Politica Internazionale (CeSPI), initiated a research project on the role that civil society organizations from 12 countries involved in the Berlin Process play in the European integration process of the Western Balkans. The project goal is to collect their inputs stemming from the Civil Society Forum (CSF) meeting in Trieste in order to elaborate policy recommendations that can contribute to the European Union enlargement process.
The Civil Society Forum, which is an integral part of the Berlin Process, as a platform enabling dialogue between civil society and regional and European decision makers, gathered more than 200 participants this year in Trieste. The CSF policy recommendations became a part of the Western Balkans Summit Declaration by the Italian Chair. Within the project of OBCT and CeSPI, these results will be further elaborated for key decision-makers in view of the next Western Balkans Summit in United Kingdom 2018.
The project outputs will be presented and discussed with Italian foreign policy actors and disseminated to a number of European stakeholders. The project is being implemented with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
